ASR's Head of Research, Nick Nelson joined CNBC’s Julianna Tatelbaum to discuss Europe’s growing need for defence spending, as regional defence stocks hit record highs.
Following key developments at the Munich Security Conference, Nick shared that it’s clear that Europe must allocate more resources to defence in today’s evolving geopolitical landscape.
Nick shared his views on European markets, noting their strong start to the year with eight weeks of outperformance. While Europe has historically lagged, some valuations remain attractive. However, from a macro and profits perspective, the U.S. is in a stronger position, leading to a neutral stance on Europe.
Within Europe, Germany’s DAX has been a standout, driven more by stock-specific factors—such as Rheinmetall, SAP and Siemens Energy—than by macro data.
Upcoming elections and potential fiscal policy shifts, including increased defence spending, could further influence market sentiment.
